Hopes & Fears

Hopes & Fears

by China Water Risk 18 December, 2017

Our world seems to be increasingly split into that of hope and fear. Given this, we look at what is making us hopeful and fearful this festive season.  On  the “hope” side, yes, our glaciers are melting but Wangchuk of SEMCOL is making artificial glaciers as we learn in our interview with him. Meanwhile, as the US and EU are pulling back foreign aid, Prof Biswas & Hartley from the Lee Kuan Yew School for Public Policy see this as an opportunity for China. Then in fashion, where hyper-consumption continues to grow, so too is the mainstreaming of sustainability. Catch up on industry buzz with CWR’s McGregor. On the “fear” side, if you’re partial to Moutai, water risks along the Chishui “intoxicating” River could spell change as we warn. Meanwhile, “Fish forever more”( 年年有“鱼”) could also be in jeopardy. We leave you to mull over these hopes and fears plus, CWR Tan’s thoughts on our contradictory behaviours from tech to values. We remain exuberant with China’s Water Pollution Prevention and Control Law coming into effect on 1 January 2018 and hope you do too. Happy Holidays from the China Water Risk Team!

We believe regardless of whether we care for the environment that water risks affect us all – as investors, businesses and individuals. Water risks are fundamental to future decision making and growth patterns in global economies. Water scarcity has emerged as a critical sustainability issue for China's economy and since water powers the economy, we aim to highlight these risks inherent in each sector. In addition, we write about current trends in the global water industry, analyze changes occurring both regionally and globally, as well as providing explanations on the new technologies that are revolutionizing this industry.
