Is it Yay or Neigh in the Year of the Fire Horse?

Is it Yay or Neigh in the Year of the Fire Horse?

by China Water Risk 23 February, 2026

Whether we like it or not, things will change … and fast. That’s the nature of the Fire Horse. Those who can ride the horse’s fast-paced momentum will see effortless wins, but those who stand in its fiery path will go down in flames. So, make sure it’s yay not neigh with our 5 trends for the Year of the Horse.

The Horse evokes images of free-spirited horses running wild across the plains and in Chinese culture, the arrival of the Horse brings success and good fortune “马到成功”. There will be plenty this year, but great wins for some will be great losses for others. So, make sure you are on the right side. This is doubly important in 2026 as the horse, already inherently fiery & energetic, has been given a double boost by the element of the year, fire.

The Fire Horse will make sure that things will change quickly but changes will be transformative & disruptive. All around the world, rapid sweeping changes of the systemic kind are on the cards giving us less time to respond. Systems will be tested so be ready – we are not just talking about global politics but our global climate and water systems. 2026 will be a rough ride.

It will feel like chaos is reigning. In times like these it’s important to decipher the underlying trends to see the Fire Horse’s true path. In 2026, the Horse will push our water systems to the brink and gallop us out of an era of “Water A” into a new era of “Water B” & water bankruptcy.  Yes, its official we are globally water bankrupt … but you likely missed this as it was declared the same day as Mark Carney’s “middle countries” speech at Davos.

Water – the fundamental building block of all our systems from manufacturing to finance is changing … so unless you know what’s shifting, you’ll just be building on/investing in a house of cards. Remember, water in eastern cultures is synonymous with wealth. Without water, there is no growth, no prosperity. Read our 5 trends now to decipher these seismic shifts.

Horses have been linked with racing & betting for centuries. So, it’s time to place bets. And since it’s the “Fire” Horse, the odds favour BIG BETS of the strategic kind. One sure bet is backing the inevitable rise of a trillion-dollar adaptation industry.

It’s early days yet and there will be much jockeying for an advantageous position at the starting line. Some tracks will trot along while others will gallop ahead. Here, we unpack 3 areas that will have corporates, investors & banks chomping at the bits.

These are sure bets as the Fire Horse will blaze a trail of destruction & disruptions with compounding & escalating physical risks that will force us to react. Already in January, the US snow-pocalypse racked up insured losses of US$6.7 billion! There will be no let up … the risks & opportunities are HUGE so saddle up – it’s ride or die.

The first rule to building resilience is to know the extent of the risk ahead. Know what will kill you & then figure out how to survive. China’s on it and is galloping to shore up resilience on all fronts in 2026. Why? Because floods, droughts & other water disasters caused direct economic losses of CNY576bn for 2024/25.

With these numbers, you bet China is motivated to reduce risks with vigour & robust energy, channelling “龙马精神”, the “spirit of a dragon-horse”. See what it’s doing (digital twins, sponge cities, dams++) to shore up water security & resilience risks in Water B.

But wait, China is also dismantling dams. In Guizhou, 342 dams on the Chishui River were removed to restore the Dabry sturgeon’s migration route. Whereas over in the Loess Plateau, more than 58,000 silt dams are installed for preventing soil erosion but also capture a surprising 22MTCO2!

More of these will be needed and China’s just come up with a way to fund them – yay! Dr. Dong Liang Shen explains how China recently unveiled a first-of-its-kind methodology to account for silt dam carbon sequestration. It is still early days but one day we might see “silt dam credits” being traded. Who knows the Fire Horse may even accelerate an international roll out.

We get creative when our backs are against the wall so don’t discount a “sudden disruptive invention”. We believe a game-changer for hard-to-abate sectors to be ROTOBOOST. It helps adapt existing LNG industrial processes to produce hydrogen & graphene on little water & carbon – double yay!

Now that’s not only decarb but circular as well! Imagine if the Global South adopted this tech – indeed, the company is already working to scale up with industrial giants Petronas and Baowu on green steel. Perhaps green steel and ships could be running on hydrogen sooner than you think. Check out our interview with ROTOBOOST CEO Kaisa Nikulainen.

Faster adaptation & transition needs lots of money. Want to know the trends in China’s green finance, green trade & blue finance? How will stress testing, regulations & AI governance shape up in 2026? Don’t miss out … check out Syntao Green Finance & China SIF’s Top 10 Trends in Responsible Investment.

So, as you can see, despite an ever-erratic water cycle, we remain optimistic. For sure, “neigh-sayers” will be plentiful, after all it’s the Horse year. They’ll prance around but let them distract. The real game of disruption is afoot – decarb will be more rapid than you think despite Trump’s exit from everything climate.

Systems are changing – oil/gas was the engine for growth in Water A but their stranding & energy security concerns in Water B plus the tight liquidity constraints in Water B mean we are moving to a new era of renewable/ hydrogen/ nuclear/ storage driven development. So, reposition to capitalise on frontier tech now.

But don’t get complacent though, faster decarb may slow down rising water risks but Water B will still wreak havoc. It’s not an either-or strategy. Be holistic – cast out no sense strategies and jockey for pole position across all 5 trends and you’ll win hands down.

Channel the Fire Horse and demand grand change – dare to be transformative, not incremental in everything you do. Also, the energy of the Fire Horse does not favour those who procrastinate. Delay not and dare greatly now – lean into the convergence – it’s here AND there are fortunes to be made. Think billions kerching!

Remember, the only certain thing in 2026 is uncertainty.  And these flames of uncertainty will only be fuelled by the current state of global politics and fanned by extreme weather events and shifting planetary baselines.

In the midst of this sea change, it pays to stay nimble. Amid the chaos stay focused; put blinkers on if you have to avoid distractions. Focus only on the fundamental flows of water – imminent water bankruptcy is the only liquidity crisis you should be focusing on in 2026.

Stay liquid, dare great things and don’t let the neigh-sayers get you down. Ride on…

We believe regardless of whether we care for the environment that water risks affect us all – as investors, businesses and individuals. Water risks are fundamental to future decision making and growth patterns in global economies. Water scarcity has emerged as a critical sustainability issue for China's economy and since water powers the economy, we aim to highlight these risks inherent in each sector. In addition, we write about current trends in the global water industry, analyze changes occurring both regionally and globally, as well as providing explanations on the new technologies that are revolutionizing this industry.
