I Need a Hero

If Bonnie Tyler’s song is now playing in your head, you are old enough to make a difference to the climate crisis. Youths today are left to live with the consequences of our decisions and our complacency has left them no choice but to strike to have their voices heard. This month we celebrate their voices – their message is clear and succinct – seas are rising, so are we … there is no planet B.
Hear from 16 year old Adele Lo, Hong Kong’s own Greta Thunberg and one of the student leaders leading the charge on HK’s School Strike for Climate Action on why she “knew wholeheartedly” that she had to take a stand in the fight for the planet. Find out from Cassia Moraes and Fernanda Matsuoka how the Youth Climate Leaders platform has empowered them and other under 30s to become the next generation of climate leaders.
The next gen wants the generation in charge to panic. “Inevitable” was how Thanos from the latest Avengers movie described wiping out half the universe. As we edge closer to the tipping point, Woody Chan, the youngest member of our team confesses “how desperate and hopeless” he is feeling as he contemplates the not-so-bright future – he’s even starting to sympathise with Thanos.
Whether you are feeling inspired or depressed, it’s time to start your own climate hero journey now. If you are not entirely sure what the next gen are getting angry over, get up to speed at Hong Kong’s first Museum on Climate Change. Cecilia Lam, the founding director of the museum walks us through its climate exhibits and innovative research showcases and shares her hopes for it to inspire Hong Kongers to build a sustainable future.
More individual climate heroes are definitely needed, especially since corporates are not pulling their weight. As CDP’s James Lott explains, their survey of 783 publically listed companies revealed that corporate responses to rising water challenges are just “treading water”.
At this rate we need to start imagining a pantheon of ‘Climate Avengers’, ‘Environmental Justice League’ and ‘Planetary Agents of SHIELD’ to fight alongside Captain Planet. Fortunately, there are already success stories. Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s Nick Jeffries shares six of these from China as the nation starts to go circular: from entrepreneurs, large corporates to local governments; get inspired by China’s circular buzz!
Dust off your ‘climate ignorance/ indifference/ fatalism/ blues’ and do something! Even bankers can be heroes – if you are in Hong Kong, join us next week to protect savings across Asia at a HKGFA-AIGCC seminar with the SFC; if not join us for a webinar with Ceres.
If in Shanghai in June, put on your cape and sit at the Water Stewardship China Network Roundtable plus catch us at the Global Cotton Sustainability Forum. Or get the low-down on mounting challenges ahead in Asia at the Lee Kwan Yew School of Water Policy or get inspired by water innovations at the BlueTech Forum.
Yes, we want you to channel your inner Aquaman or Mera – protect our seas, protect our waters. Start now!
