Frameworks for Shared Indus/Transboundary Waters: A Multidisciplinary Dialogue
This conference initiates a constructive dialogue concerning the Indus Basin and Indus Water Treaty and assist in exploring whether the IWT engenders a set of geographical imaginaries, which have proven quite problematic with the passage of time. It aims to i) highlight sub-national scale subjectivities on the IWT—especially of the contested region of Jammu & Kashmir; ii) take a multidisciplinary approach to understanding and perhaps mapping the future development of the Indus Water Treaty in the international context while considering it’s legal, technocratic, climatological, geographical, economic and socio-political aspects.
Such an interdisciplinary discussion at international level may become a basis for updating or reinterpreting this treaty in light of existing and looming challenges. This conference would be a platform for generating substantial dialogue amongst the participants on IWT/China’s transboundary water cooperation/water governance (management)/power politics/environmental protection of water resources/general normative frameworks for sharing water resources/international water law/ settlement of disputes over water resources.
