Today, we chat about her journey with Climind and hear her thoughts on innovating at the AI-sustainability intersection.


CWR: Thanks for speaking with us, Karen! Your startup, Climind, aims to help businesses decarbonise quicker – what inspired you to create this tool?

Karen Wang (KW): The inspiration came from a very specific frustration during my time as a research assistant at Imperial College London. I remember spending six months writing a single climate report. It was grueling manual work, and by the time it was published, I felt it lacked the immediate impact the world needed.

That’s when I realized the gap: the climate industry has brilliant minds, but the workflow is incredibly slow. We don’t lack data; we lack the speed to process it. I wanted to build a “Climate Mind” – hence the name – to act as an intelligent brain that accelerates this process.

Our Chinese name (藍點起源) pays tribute to the “Pale Blue Dot” photo by Voyager 1. Seeing Earth as that tiny pixel reminds us of our fragility. I founded Climind to protect that dot, not just with passion, but with the most efficient technology available.

CWR: How has the response been so far? What were the biggest challenges you had to overcome?

KW: The traction has been strong. We are now serving over 15 large enterprise clients, ranging from financial institutions, railways, to listed companies across varied sectors. Our system has processed thousands of enterprise ESG reports and hundreds of compliance documents in the environmental sector.

But the biggest challenge wasn’t just building the AI; it was finding the correct problem to solve. We had to adopt a strategy similar to early-stage Palantir. We had to get our hands dirty and deeply integrate into our clients’ workflows. Climate compliance is a “hard” industry with messy data. We had to understand their business logic better than they did to design software that actually solves problems, rather than just being a cool software to increase efficiency. Earning that trust and integrating into their daily stream was the hardest, but most rewarding part.

CWR: Climate innovation is becoming a hot space now. What are the gaps in this space that you’d like to see filled? And as more people join this space, how will Climind distinguish itself from competitors?

KW: The gap isn’t in “chatting” with AI; it’s in accuracy and trust. General models like GPT or DeepSeek are trained on public knowledge; they hallucinate when you ask specific, high-stakes questions like “How does my client achieve Green Mark certification step-by-step?”.

We position ourselves as the AI company that understands sustainability the best, and the sustainability tech company that understands AI best. We focus on helping clients realize actual commercial value – saving 90% of their due diligence time or ensuring compliance – rather than just selling “green” concepts.

CWR: So what’s next for Climind? What are the trends you’re looking out for in 2026?

KW: Our keyword for 2026 is “Growth.”

Over the past 2 years, we’ve explored a wide range of sustainability use cases. Since late last year, our focus has shifted toward a harder question: what actually endures. We’re looking closely at which sustainability requirements are essential for companies to survive, and which businesses are structurally positioned to scale over time.

We want to embed AI into cross-border business scenarios & help companies grow

China operates the world’s most efficient and scalable supply chain. Our strategy is to embed AI into more real cross-border business scenarios, helping these companies grow in a way that is genuinely sustainable. In practice, this means two priorities: accelerating compliance iteration – especially in environmental areas such as recycling – and improving conversion efficiency as we expand into new sectors.

At its core, sustainability is not only an environmental issue; it’s also about governance, resilience, and long-term viability. That’s where we see our responsibility: enabling our clients to grow, not just to report.

We also believe the industry is moving beyond the AI hype cycle. Our approach is grounded in a few simple principles: quality over shortcuts, rigor over impulse, patience over speed, and credibility above all else.

Ultimately, the market rewards those who solve foundational problems over trends…

Looking ahead to 2026, we’re not chasing “magic solutions.” We’re committing to deep, institutional partnerships and focusing on the unglamorous but essential work – data transparency, compliance, and trust. Our conviction is that the market will ultimately reward those who solve these foundational problems, rather than those who simply follow the next trend.

CWR: Lastly, do you have any words of advice for others who also want to innovate in the climate tech space?

KW: My advice is simple, but often overlooked: spend less time obsessing over how you build, and more time understanding why you’re building.

Today, creating products has become faster and more accessible than ever. The technical barriers are falling quickly. At the same time, the cost of discovering real demand is rising. AI has dramatically increased the number of products in the market, which means the real challenge now lies in identifying users and building genuine resonance with them.

Defining a meaningful problem can help bridge the gap between innovation & scale

In climate tech in particular, the importance of clearly defining a meaningful problem is still underestimated. Because capital in this sector is structurally split between early-stage venture funding and late-stage infrastructure investment, many solutions struggle to bridge the gap between innovation and scale.

I believe growth ultimately comes from two things:

  • Choosing a problem that truly matters
  • Pairing it with an unfair advantage in access, insight, or positioning

Building a company is a collective effort – it’s a team sport focused on problem-solving. Finding the right allies is critical. For example, when we decided to enter the cross-border e-commerce sector, we raised capital from one of the world’s largest railway operators. That relationship gave us unique access to cross-border logistics data – something that would have been very difficult to acquire otherwise.

Railways are also under growing pressure to deliver lower-carbon solutions, creating a natural overlap between sustainability and commercial opportunity. Over time, we’ve learned that sustainable growth comes from deliberately building strong internal and external teams, and from focusing on the intersection between what you do best and the most important problems worth solving.
